Mr. Abdirahman Omar Osman aka Eng. Yarisow has been involved in Somali politics for the last 12 years. He served the Government of Somalia as a Senior Advisor, Minister for twice and Spokesperson of the government. He is the co-author of the comprehensive National Strategy for Preventing & Countering Violent Extremism (P/CVE) for Somalia. He introduced the Right Path (Tubta Toosan) Initiative. Mr Osman also drafted the Strategic Communication for the government and the Media law through a rigorous consultation with key stakeholders.
Mr. Osman, popularly known by his moniker Engineer Yarisow graduated from the Somali National University in 1986 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He further developed his career by undertaking professional courses NVQ II in Business Administration and Higher Education Certificate on Computer Science in London and he further extended his education in London where he successfully completed a Masters Degree in Housing Management from the University of Westminster in 2004. Also obtained Master of Business Administration and Management through distance learning while he was in Mogadishu 2013 – 2015.
Eng. Yarisow has been leading the CVE process in Somalia since 2013. He has strategically planned tailored programs and activities to the specific local context. He has done a series of CVE consultations with key stakeholders in Somalia including religious leaders, civil society groups such as women, youth, clan leaders and so on.
Eng. Yarisow has 14 years experience working in the UK. During his stay, he served the local government in various senior positions at the Housing Department of London Borough of Ealing.
He lived in Mogadishu for the last 9 years where he was heavily involved in Somali politics and held several key positions within the Government. At one time, he served as the Chief of Staff of the Office of the Prime Minister, Director of Protocol & Public Relations of the Office of the President, Minister of Treasury, Minister of Information, Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister and Senior Advisor & Spokesperson to the Office of the President.
From 1986 to 1991, Eng. Yarisow worked with the Ministry of Public Works & Housing and Ministry of Finance of Somalia as an Engineer/Project Manager.
During his time in the UK, Eng. Yarisow served as a community leader and School Governor for Schools in London. He was also the brain child behind the biggest Somali Diaspora Conference in Leicester in 2007. He was also the Chairperson of Somali Diaspora from 2004 to 2008. In 2003 he was part of a group from the Diaspora that attended Somali Conference in Nairobi and managed to reconcile warring faction leaders.
