Federal Government of Somalia Issues Warning Against Disinformation and Extremist Propaganda
Mogadishu, 30 April 2025: The Federal Government of Somalia has expressed concern over individuals and social media platforms actively spreading false information intended to undermine national stability.
Recent disinformation claims falsely suggested that a mortar attack carried out by the extremist group Al-Shabaab targeted the Halane compound and parts of Mogadishu Airport, alleging that several foreign nationals were killed. These reports have been thoroughly debunked as entirely fabricated and significantly exaggerated.
Al-Shabaab, the extremist Kharijites group, has conducted indiscriminate mortar attacks from hidden locations, striking civilian areas in Mogadishu without a specific strategic target. Such assaults have frequently resulted in civilian casualties, including children attending Qur’anic schools, who have been recently killed or injured in similar incidents.
The Somali government is actively monitoring individuals involved in spreading these false narratives and extremist propaganda, whether directly or indirectly, due to their potential to threaten public security both domestically and internationally.
The authorities strongly condemn these malicious actions and will employ all lawful measures necessary to safeguard public safety and protect national security.
