Dhuusamareeb, 14 August 2025 – The Media Ethics Training for Election Coverage in Somalia concluded today in Dhuusamareeb. The two-day training aimed to enhance journalists’ understanding of the role of the media in the country’s electoral process.
The workshop, jointly organized by the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism of the Federal Government of Somalia and the Ministry of Information of Galmudug, benefited 20 journalists from various media outlets in the Galmudug State.
Ruun Mahmoud Osman, Chairperson of the Galmudug Women Journalists’ Association, speaking on behalf of the participating journalists, said the workshop was vital in strengthening journalists’ skills and sense of responsibility during elections. She urged journalists to report on elections with impartiality and transparency.
Abdishakur Ali Ahmed, Director of the Strategic Communication Department at the Federal Ministry of Information, noted that this training is part of broader efforts to develop the skills and ethics of Somali journalists, to ensure that elections are transparent and fair, and to equip the media to report responsibly. He expressed gratitude to the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) for its support.
Abubakar Nur Mahmoud, Director General of the Ministry of Information of Galmudug, thanked the Federal Ministry of Information and partner organizations for their efforts in improving the media sector. He also advised journalists to apply the knowledge gained from the training in fulfilling their role in election coverage.
This was the third training of its kind held in the country and is part of a program led by the Ministry of Information of Somalia to strengthen the role of the Somali media in election coverage.
