Federal Government of Somalia’s Weekly Briefing Mogadishu, Friday, 09th May, 2025

  1. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud chaired the two-day National Consultative Council Conference.
  2. A 10-point communiqué has been issued by the National Consultative Council, with the focus on unifying the fight against terrorism, accelerating voter registration for elections, recognizing SSC Khaatumo, and requiring the Ministry of Interior to advise on the legal status of Jubbaland State.
  3. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with General Michael E. Langley, Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), to discuss efforts to eliminate the Kharijites Al Shabab and strengthen coordination of operations related to the broader partnership that includes AUSSOM.
  4. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has expressed his condolences to the family, relatives, and the Somali people in general on the passing of Ugaas Abdullahi Ugaas Farah, one of the prominent Somali traditional elders.
  5. Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre opened the National Food and Agriculture Investment Conference, stating that the government is committed to encouraging domestic production, which is essential for developing the country’s economy and achieving food self-sufficiency.
  6. Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre expressed his condolences on the passing of Ugaas Abdullahi Ugaas Farah, may God have mercy on him, who was one of the Somali traditional leaders who played a major role in peace and state-building in Somalia.
  7. Second Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi, inaugurated the digital infrastructure service of the National Identification Authority (NIRA).

  11. The National Electoral and Boundaries Commission continues registering voters in Mogadishu as it prepares to move on to starting registration in the capitals of the Federal Member States.
  12. Minister of Defense Ahmed Moalim Fiqi met with Ambassador Harriet Mathews, Director General for Africa in the British Foreign Office.
  13. Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Yusuf Mohamed Aden, met in Doha with the Minister of Labor of Qatar, Ali bin Samikh Al-Marri, to discuss strengthening cooperation between the two countries on labor issues, developing workplaces, expanding training, and enhancing job opportunities.

Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Daud Aweis Jama, has congratulated all Somali journalists and the media practitioners on the World Press Freedom Day, and he praised the role that the media and journalists are playing in raising public awareness of the prevention of unjust ideas and peacebuilding.
  15.  Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Ahmed Hassan Adan, met with the FAO Representative in Somalia, Mr. Etienne Peterschmitt, to discuss ways to provide full support to fishermen.
  16. Foreign Affairs Minister Abdisalan Abdi Ali spoke by phone with the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Sudan, Ambassador Hussein Al-Amin, stressing the Federal Republic of Somalia’s position in supporting the peace, unity and territorial integrity of the Republic of Sudan.
  17. Minister of Defense Ahmed Moalim Fiqi has commended the Somali National Army and local forces for the heavy defeat of killing 30 members of the Kharijites militia in the areas of Muqluga Ali, Ceelhareeri, Hareeri Madoobe and Garas Magan in HirShabelle State.
  18. The President of the Galmudug State Ahmed Abdi Kariye, has laid the foundation stone for the reconstruction of a paved road that will connect Guriceel and Dhusamareb districts, which will be built through cooperation between the Galmudug administration and the local residents.
  19. Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Dahir Shire Mohamed, who participated in the Istanbul Natural Resources Conference, announced that Somalia will soon produce oil.
  20. The Health Minister Ali Haji Adan and the Deputy Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Somalia, Ambassador Mohamed Al-Mudeyri, bid farewell to twin girls in Mogadishu who are undergoing medical surgery in Saudi Arabia.
  21. State Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Asad Abdirizak Mohamed, who attended a conference in Sri Lanka to discuss agricultural development, environmental issues and climate change, held a meeting with the country’s Prime Minister, Mrs. Harini Nireka Amarasuriya.
  22. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change organized a preliminary meeting in preparation for participation in the 30th International Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which will take place in the city of Belem, Brazil.
  23. The Somali Ambassador to Indonesia, Dr. Faisal Ahmed Salad, presented his credentials to the country’s President, Mr. Prabowo.
  24. The National Communications Authority (NCA) of Somalia has signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with the Malaysian Communications and Media Authority (MCMC) and the Malaysian Cybersecurity Agency (CyberSecurity Malaysia).
  25. The Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Yusuf Mohamed Aden, met in Riyadh with the Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Development of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Nasser Abuthnain.
  26. The Deputy Commander of the Somali Police Force, Lieutenant General Osman Abdullahi Mohamed (Kaniif), participated in the EAPCCO regional police conference, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
  27. The Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Yusuf Mohamed Aden, attended the 7th International Conference on Occupational Safety and Health held in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
  28. Minister of Trade and Industry, Mahmoud Adan Geesood, met with the Turkish Ambassador to Somalia, Mr. Alper Aktaş, to discuss strengthening trade cooperation between the two countries, industrial development, and encouraging investment, especially among Somali businesspeople.
  29. The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Drs. Maryama Mohamed Hussein, officially closed the 3rd phase of the campaign for heart surgery for children born with congenital heart defects, which was jointly organized by the Ministry of Health, Somali Sudanese Hospital, Hormuud Salam Foundation, Muntada Foundation and Mogadishu Heart Center.
