Muqdisho, 15 May 2026: The Federal Government of Somalia, in fulfillment of its constitutional mandate to implement a one-person, one-vote electoral system that grants citizens the opportunity to exercise their constitutional rights, reaffirms that the country has entered a historic phase of transition toward a democratic system founded on the principle of universal suffrage and direct elections.
In parallel with these efforts, the Government has maintained continuous consultations and dialogue with electoral stakeholders and various segments of Somali society in order to listen to and consider their views and recommendations.
Over the past three days, the Government held discussions with some opposition members, during which certain proposals were presented that contradicted the fundamental constitutional rights of citizens to elect and be elected.
Accordingly, the Federal Government of Somalia wishes to assure the Somali people that the country will proceed with free, fair, transparent, and credible one-person, one-vote elections, conducted in accordance with the Constitution, the laws of the country, and the Government’s declared political program and commitments.
The Federal Government of Somalia further reiterates, as it has consistently maintained, that the door to dialogue, consultation, and constructive engagement remains open.
